She held the mic out to the crowd, and we all joined in, not missing a beat.
âAnd I just wanna hold you all night long. Whenever I'm around you, nothing's wrong. I'm hoping that you'll always be around, you got me on a high, I don't wanna come down.â I belted the lyrics out with my eyes closed. All I could see was Karsynâs face as I sang.
A tap on my shoulder snapped me out of my inner concert. Opening my eyes, I smiled and took the drink that Jaya was handing me. Tossing it back, I handed her the cup, and she poured me more of whatever she had concocted.
âSlow down, girl. We got all night to get fucked up,â Jaya joked, handing me my cup back. I took smaller sips and swayed my hips to the song change. The rest of the night flowed just like Jenae promised. Good drinks, laughs, and no drama. Maybe moving here was for the best after all.
The Next Afternoon
Slowly walking toward my front door with a cup of hot tea in my hand, I bent down and picked up the mail that the mail lady had just pushed through the slot in my door. Walking back to my kitchen, I carefully set my mug down and shuffled through the envelopes. I was surprised I was not still dead to the world after my night last night. I drank more drinks than normal, and I wasnât sure how we were going to get our drunk asses back home until Jayaâs boyfriend stepped in and drove us. I didnât remember what time I got into my bed, but I was up at noon like nothing ever happened. After seeing that there was nothing but junk mail, I tossed it aside and picked up my phone. There were a few text messages from my brothers and Yari, but I skipped over them and went right to the message from Kaylyn.
Kaylyn: Hey Nimah, Karsyn misses you and heâs sorry but donât blame him. It was me they begged him to help you get a job. I just wanted to do it as a thank you. I really hope you can forgive him eventually but if you donât, can we still be friends?
Smiling, I answered her question but ignored the rest of her message. I wasnât ready to address the situation with Karsyn, and even if I were, it wouldnât be with Kaylyn.
Me: Of course, we can still be friends. Matter a fact, Iâm making lunch so be at my house and twenty minutes and make sure to bring that appetite of yours with you.
I set my phone down and got to work on lunch for Kaylyn and I.
